2001 North American International Auto Show DETROIT - General Motors' HUMMER brand debuted the H1 Alpha Vision Vehicle at the 2001 North American International Auto Show. It is the logical evolution of the most serious 4x4 on earth. The prototype retains its outstanding off-road capability and rugged characteristics and now includes features such as the powerful Vortec 8100 8.1L V8 gasoline engine, a premium entertainment and technology package and refinements of the vehicle's interior and exterior. "The H1 Alpha is a truly exclusive vehicle," said Michael C. DiGiovanni, marketing director for the HUMMER brand. "The truck is performance, toughness and high-tech luxury refinement in one complete package."
Unbelievable Power and Capability
Rod Hall, winner of 16 Baja 1000 desert races and the leader of Team HUMMER Racing, has developed a unique fully-independent suspension package featured on the H1 Alpha. The suspension has large 3.5" diameter shocks combined with external reservoirs to allow for position sensitive valving, providing a smoother more controlled ride and increased wheel travel. The larger volume allows the shock to work in high temperatures while maintaining optimal efficiency. Increased wheel travel of more than three inches allows more tire contact with the ground enhancing the ride and nitrogen gas shocks can be manually adjusted for fine-tuning. In addition, lower rate springs also add to the ride comfort and a front sway bar aides in quick steering response and a reduction in body roll. Adding to its rugged character and toughness, the H1 Alpha is equipped with Goodyear MT/R (37x12.50R17LT) Tires. The tire has been designed to withstand rugged off-road use providing excellent traction during acceleration and braking. Three-ply sidewall construction and an advanced silica compound add strength, durability and puncture resistance, resulting in a long treadlife. Aggressive tread extending onto the sidewall, provides additional traction. Polished aluminum 17" wheels garnish the H1 Alpha. The wheels utilize the stainless steel Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS), which allows the tire pressure to be adjusted for better mobility in the mud, sand, snow or other off-road environments.
Superior Technology
The H1 Alpha is also equipped with the Raytheon Night Vision system complete with a new day/night Heads-Up Display (HUD) designed for the HUMMER. The system will allow drivers to see objects at three to five times their low beam headlamp range, increasing reaction time to help avoid hazards in highway and off-road situations. Furthermore, Night Vision helps the driver see past oncoming headlight glare, which can temporarily blind motorists. The system is exceptionally easy to use. System activation occurs with the flip of a switch and the driver pulls the HUD into a comfortable viewing position. The HUD is as easy to use as a rearview mirror because the driver simply glances up to see the infrared image, minimizing driver eyestrain and fatigue. Even in the desert or on isolated mountain roads, an H1 Alpha driver will not be lost. This HUMMER is equipped with OnStar, General Motors' in-vehicle communication and information service. OnStar uses the Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite network and cellular technology to link the vehicle and driver to the OnStar Center and locate the vehicle. OnStar advisors are available to offer real-time, personalized assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The truck's high-tech features also embrace the rear seats as well with the Delphi Integrated Rear Seat Audio/Video. This system includes a LCD 7" color monitor, audio/video control boards, DVD player and a video game player flush-mounted in the headliner.
Refined Packaging and Luxury
HUMMER H1 Alpha Dimensions (in./mm.)
Manufactured for General Motors by AM General, the HUMMER H1 is known for its unique presence. The H1's low center of gravity, long wheelbase and track width make the H1 extremely balanced, even on a 40 percent side slope. The truck has 16 inches of ground clearance, which is almost double that of other 4x4's, and approach and departure angles of 72 degrees and 37.5 degrees respectively. General Motors and AM General reached an agreement in December 1999, by which GM acquired exclusive ownership of the HUMMER brand name worldwide. As part of this agreement, the two companies are jointly developing future HUMMER derivatives in a partnership to pursue product, marketing and distribution opportunities for HUMMER.
