HML Members Kick Butt in the 1997 Hummer Challenge
Page Two

Hal Johnson decides to take a dip in the pool. He was much later in the trials. By now, the water is pure fine mud, about 3 foot deep. Most of the vehicles became airborn.

Some of the Hummers went in to ruts in the mud. Those tires are spinning wildly, but the Hummer isn't moving much.

Sometimes other Hummers help out in the race when the wheels keep spinning. The winching you are seeing is not part of the event.

The log roll was part of the Obstacle course in the clay pits. I am doing this at about 30 miles per hour. There were five people in my wagon, all wearing helmets. No one was hurt, but my brain was shaken a bit.

This was a great event, also held in the CLAY PIT. While blindfolder (a shirt put over the head), you put the pedal to the floor and do a simple run. Then, you turn around and come back through two flags. You "navigator" directs you where to go. One guy almost hit the paramedics and they scrambled far. I was the only one who was disqualified for not returning to the starting flags. Somehow, I felt blinded.

Winching was also done in the PITS. The object was to winch your own Hummer first in one direction, detach the cable, and re-attach it to a cable 90 degrees to it, and then pass some cones. The timing was done only when the vehicle was not moving (to account for varying speed of winches). Joe Cama is doing a great deal of work here holding the switch, while his navigator Jim Patton is pulling the winch cable.

In the end, it was all worth it. We had a blast because it was organized well, and because we walked away knowing our Hummers better. Here Hal and Stefan, his navigator, show off their second place win.

Off-Road American gave a wonderful dinner at their facility. Here, Bill Myers and his navigator accept First Place at the ceremony. The sponsors were great at helping with the whole affair. They were present throughout. The MileMarker people were with us to the end. Hummer of Orlando did the repairs of broken half-shafts, transfer cases, etc. Off-Road America showed us their great facilities, including the 502 Conversion. For me, the whole experience was spectacular. Joe Cama, Towanda, PA
